Latching Relays

Latching relays, which are often referred to as impulse relays, are relays that change the contact state with each voltage input pulse. Latching relays are renowned for their high vibration and shock resistance.

When power is applied latching relays determine which position the relay is in and energise the opposing coil. The contacts within the relay transfer and then maintain that position when power is removed. When power is reapplied, the relay contacts transfer to the opposite state and then hold that position until the power on/off cycle is repeated.

Latching relays are ideal for applications such as switching a single device on or off from one or more different locations with a pushbutton or momentary switch, such as a lighting circuit, or a conveyor.
