Current Transformers

Current transformers are electrical circuit power devices that are utilised to transform the input current from a higher to a lower current so that the output power can be monitored and controlled safely. Current transformers, also known as step-down transformers, consist of a central core with a primary and a secondary winding. When an AC flows through the primary winding a magnetic flux induces an alternating current within the secondary winding proportional to the current in the primary. Once the initial current has been reduced it can be safely monitored and measured using an ammeter.

Utilised in many different applications current transformers come in many different guises, from large scale units found in electrical substations to small scale moulded case current transformers which are devices utilised to measure and control the alternating current found in electrical and digital circuits.
