RFID, or Radio Frequency Identification, is the wireless non-contact data transfer technology that uses radio frequency waves to transfer unique article data. Items tagged with RFID tags allows users to automatically and uniquely identify and track inventory and assets.

RFID technology is making the use auto-ID technology commonplace, cheap to adopt and install it allows RFID tags to be read without line of sight and depending on the type of RFID can have a read range of over 20 meters. An RFID tag in simple terms, contains 2 parts, an antenna for transmitting and receiving signals, and an RFID chip which stores the tag’s ID and other information. RFID applications are very broad, including inventory tracking and supply chain management, rental item tracking to time checking motor sport vehicles.

RFID system contains four general components; readers, antennas, tags and cabling, with the simplest systems comprising of a mobile RFID reader and RFID tags. More complex systems could feature multiport readers, multiple antennas, beacons and so on.
