Hall Effect Sensors

A Hall effect sensor is used to measure the magnitude of a magnetic field and its output voltage is directly proportional to the magnetic field strength experienced. Hall effect sensors are generally used for proximity sensing, positioning, speed detection, and current sensing applications.

Commonly used in automotive applications, hall effect sensors are utilised to time the speed of wheels and shafts for ignition timing, tachometers and anti-lock braking systems. Hall effect sensors can also be found in brushless DC electric motors to detect the position of the permanent magnet.

A hall effect sensor can typically be operated at higher frequencies than a mechanical switch and isn’t affected by environmental contaminants being a sealed unit meaning they can be used in extreme environments.
